Solar electricity is generated using solar photovoltaic (PV) panels that convert sunlight into electricity. It's a clean, renewable source of power.
How does a solar PV system work?
Solar PV systems use cells that convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity, even on cloudy days. This energy powers your home or is sent to the grid if unused.
How does solar benefit the environment?
Solar power is renewable and doesn’t emit greenhouse gases, helping to lower your carbon footprint.
Are there any other benefits of solar?
Yes:
- Reduced electricity bills (e.g., 2.8kWp system = ~35% annual usage)
- Income from excess power via Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
- No running costs
- Low maintenance
- Charge electric vehicles for free
How much roof space will I need?
It depends on your energy needs and property size. A typical 1kW system needs around 10m² of roof space.
How much energy will the PV system generate?
Output depends on factors like array size, location, panel angle and direction, and shading. A site survey is required for an estimate.
Do I need constant sunshine for my Solar Panels to work?
No. Panels work in all daylight and still generate power on cloudy days (typically 10–25% of full capacity).
What happens if there is a power cut?
Your system automatically shuts down for safety, so there will be no power during an outage.
Do I need to inform my energy supplier?
For systems under 4kWp, we notify them after install. Larger systems need pre-approval from the network operator.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually no, but check with your local council if you're in a listed building or an area of outstanding natural beauty.
How long do Solar PV panels last?
Most panels last over 25 years and come with at least a five-year manufacturer's warranty.
What ongoing service and maintenance do Solar Panels require?
Panels should be checked every two years. We offer a maintenance package if you'd like peace of mind.
Have I missed out on the Feed-in Tariff?
Yes, but you can still benefit from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) for payments on excess electricity sent to the grid.
How long will the installation take?
Most domestic installations take 1–2 days. Scaffolding is set up a few days before.
Can I add a battery to my system later on?
Yes, this is called a retrofit system. Get in touch for advice, especially if you’re on a Feed-in Tariff.
Can I install a system on dormer windows?
Usually not, as dormers typically can’t support the weight of solar panels.
Any extras to consider?
We recommend bird protection mesh during install. We also offer EV chargers for future-proofing your property.
