Science Creates is a Bristol-based incubator project for high-tech businesses. Comera Energy were engaged to design, supply and install the photovoltaic system for the site.
The build had two constraints that shaped the programme more than the roof itself did. The railway lines and gantry immediately behind the building meant working closely with Network Rail throughout. And nesting birds on the building required us to adjust the installation programme so the young could fledge before works began on site — a delay we planned around rather than worked through.
For an organisation whose tenants are building the next generation of science and engineering companies, on-site renewable generation is both a cost measure and a statement of intent.
The installation generates around 91,667 kWh a year, offsets 21,359 kg of CO₂, and returns roughly £23,400 annually — an estimated £584,400 across its lifetime — cutting the running costs of a building that works hard around the clock.
